It’s been a season to remember for the Thunder’s Kevin Durant
And the winner of the NBA MVP Award 2013-14 is, Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
It’s no secret that the 2013-14 season has been a year to remember for Kevin Durant. The 6ft 9” forward from Washington D.C. has been tearing down records all season long and has rightfully (sorry Lebron) been named the MVP of the NBA for the first, and probably not last time, in his career.
Being in the shadow of Lebron James hasn’t been easy, especially when Durant has looked over to the Eastern conference to see his arch rival win back-to-back championships with the Miami Heat over the last two years. However this year, even “The Chosen One acknowledged the surreal play of KD:
“I think KD has had one heck of a season. And, you know, if he’s rewarded with the MVP, it would be great. It would be awesome for him, for his family. He’s played MVP-type basketball…”
Lebron James This year is what some have called Durant’s coming out party, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s front man lead the league in scoring with 32 points per game to add to his fantastic 7.4 rebounds, 5.5 assists and 1.3 steals and nearly a block per game. The man dubbed as “The Servant” definitely gave the NBA a healthy helping of basketball wizardry shooting over 50% from the field and 39% from 3-point range to go with his 41 game streak of 25 points or more – the third longest streak in league history just behind Hall of Famer’s Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson.
At the tender age of 25, Durant has his best years ahead of him. The fact that he’s four years younger than James is only a good thing as KD’s star continues to rise.
One way or another, more MVP’s and possibly an NBA title or two are in Durant’s future, winning individual awards is great for the mantel piece, but in KD’s eyes, basketball, and the awards associated with it, are very much still a team achievement:
“I put in so much work and so many people helped me,” he said. “I feel like we all won it…I couldn’t have done it without the teammates, without the trainer. Everybody .We all just did this together.”
